Mission Statement:
"We are committed to making education accessible for all, empowering students to pursue higher learning, and honoring the legacy of Edith G. Johnson through scholarships and community support."
"Special people leave us with pearls of wisdom from a lifetime of caring, sharing, abundant faith, compassion, and pride."
Affectionately called “GREAT” by her great-grandchildren, Edith G. Johnson earned this title by the way she positively impacted the lives of others. Her life was dedicated to helping others achieve their highest potential, always offering support, encouragement, and inspiration to those around her.
Born into a life of hardship after losing her mother at age five, she learned the value of hard work, sharing, and appreciating the kindness of others. Despite limited formal education, she continuously sought opportunities to learn and grow, proving that determination and resilience can open doors to success.
In 2007, while presenting gifts to graduates, she shared this powerful message:
"My education was hard work, but today’s youth can graduate and continue their education without limits. I want to encourage graduates to dream and achieve. Through Christ, all things are possible. Use this gift as a reminder of the legacy of all that has come before you. Honor the dreams of your mothers and fathers for your success. May you be blessed in all you do from this day and forever more."
"She was 91 years young—an awesome woman of God who walked with elegance and grace. Her smile would light up a room, and her encouraging attitude always made you feel good inside."
— Gala Harvell, Hampton, VA
"Mother Johnson served Emmanuel Baptist Church well. We will always remember the endearing qualities she exemplified. Her warm smile and hospitality made everyone feel welcome. She was also known for her classy dress and beautiful crowns, as well as her great sense of humor."
— Douglas Brown, Hampton, VA
The E.G. Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 to honor the grace, dignity, and commitment of Edith G. Johnson. Throughout her life, she encouraged students to pursue education without limits, and this scholarship serves as a testament to that mission.
